This biopsychosocial assessment artifact demonstrates my ability to gather and organize comprehensive information about a client’s presenting concerns, medical and mental health history, trauma, relationships, cultural factors, strengths, and resources. The assessment helped me conceptualize the client from a humanistic, person-centered perspective, focusing on anxiety, chronic pain, military stress, trauma, marital difficulties, and the client’s desire for connection and authenticity. The artifact also includes a clinical diagnosis and SMART treatment goals addressing communication, emotional intimacy, stress management, and coping skills.

How do I, as a counselor in training, demonstrate amiability in multiple contexts?

I demonstrate amiability by maintaining a warm, respectful, and approachable presence with clients, peers, supervisors, and others in my professional environment. St. Francis de Sales reminds us, “Let us walk on the way with our brothers and sisters gently, peacefully and amiably.” This quote reflects how I strive to approach others with patience, kindness, and genuine care. I regularly engage in self-care so I can remain emotionally present and attentive with clients. I also recognize the value of treatment planning in guiding clinical progress and attend trainings to strengthen areas where I continue to develop my clinical competencies. Through self-reflection and individual counseling when appropriate, I continue developing greater self-awareness, which allows me to be more genuine and understanding in my interactions with others.

How do I, as a counselor in training, handle frustrating situations?

I handle frustrating situations by taking a step back, remaining calm, and reflecting on what is within my control. Rather than reacting immediately, I try to understand the situation from different perspectives and consider how my own emotions or assumptions may be influencing my response. I use supervision, self-reflection, and healthy coping strategies to process challenging experiences and determine an appropriate professional response. I recognize that frustration is a natural part of counseling and professional growth, and I strive to approach difficult situations with patience, flexibility, and respect while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
